Dave Hinton's Rhododendron Woods in
Orono
Dave
Hinton's Rhododendron Woods is a 5 acre country garden, 2 kms from the
village of Orono, about an hour's drive north and east of Toronto in climatic
zone 5 (US Zone 4). The coldest temperature experienced in this garden
in the last 20 years was -36 degrees C (-32 degrees F) on January 16, 1994.
The usual coldest temperature is of the order of -28 degrees C (-20 degrees
F). At the 1998 Convention Dave talked about his many hybrids developed for this more northern
area, a woodland garden truly "On the Edge."
Dave has invited members of the Niagara and Toronto Chapters of the Rhododendnron Society of Canada to visit Rhododendron Woods, anytime on Saturday or Sunday, the 1st full weekend in June. This is the average prime time to view the Rhododendron Forest in bloom.
Descriptions of this "impossible woodland" are available in the links shown below. They are scanned reproductions of magazine articles and unfortunately are not of the highest reproductive quality. With patience, one can obtain a good understanding of the impressive nature of this woodland.
Directions to Rhododendron Woods are provided in the first link.
