VINECOURT DUCHESS
VINECOURT DUCHESS: Deciduous azalea. 'Chelsea Reach' x 'Watermelon Ice'. Cross (1982), raised, named, and described by A.W. Smith, Horticultural Research Institute of Ontario, Vineland Station, Ontario, Canada LOR 2E0; introduced and registered by H.R.I.O. Flowers slightly fragrant, heavy sub-stance, openly funnel-shaped, double, 2 5/8" across x 2 1/8" long, 10 per truss, 10 petals with wavy/frilled margins. Peach-yellow colored buds open to vivid yellow (14B) flowers fading to brilliant yellow (14C). Calyx 1/8", green. Flat truss, 4 3/4" across x 2 3/4" high. Leaves 4" x 2", elliptic, flat, apiculate, cuneate, both surfaces hairy. Plant upright, spreading, open growth habit, 30" high x 30" wide in 3 years from seed. Blooms late May. Plant and bud hardy to at least -15F. (Above colors refer to 1986 RHS Colour Chart.)
